Description
A hazardous material spill has not been properly dealt with until the material has been rendered harmless. The use of sorbents allows for removal of the hazmat from the spill site but then the cleanup task only begins. The site must still be cleaned to remove unabsorbed residue. The absorbent and the absorbed hazmat must now be handled, stored, and ultimately disposed of as hazardous waste. In a full-compliance environment disposal involves the following tasks: warehousing, sorting, documenting material, arranging and paying for disposal by an approved company. In addition, handling and transferring has inherent risks of secondary accidents, possibly resulting in injury to employees and more spills.
