Fire Extinguishers

Fire Extinguishers

Fire extinguishers can be a small but important part of the business or home fire safety plan. They can save lives and property by putting out a small fire or suppressing it until the fire department arrives. They should be used in conjunction with working smoke detectors and a good fire evacuation plan.

There are five classes of fire extinguishers – A, B, C, D and K – and each class can put out a different type of fire.

Class A extinguishers will put out fires in ordinary combustibles including wood, cloth, rubber, paper, as well as many plastic materials. The symbol may be found on water, foam or multipurpose extinguishers.

Class B extinguishers are for use on flammable liquids like grease, gasoline, solvents, lacquers, alcohols, oils and other similar substances. The symbol may be found on multipurpose dry chemical, dry chemical and carbon dioxide extinguishers.

Class C extinguishers are suitable for use only on electrically energized equipment fires such as motors, appliances, or power tools. The symbol may be found on carbon dioxide, multipurpose dry chemical, and dry chemical extinguishers.

Class D extinguishers are designed for use on flammable metallic substances like magnesium, potassium, titanium and sodium.  The symbol may be found on dry chemical extinguishers.

Class K extinguishers are used on fires involving commercial cooking oil appliances.

Multipurpose extinguishers can be used on different types of fires and will be labeled with more than one class, for example A-B, B-C or A-B-C. You can find the class label of most fire extinguishers in a pictograph on the side of the extinguisher.

The contents of a fire extinguisher don’t expire in the same way food does, however, the extinguisher can lose pressure over time, rendering it effectively expired if unchecked. Fire extinguishers should be inspected every year to check for pressure levels and any damage.
